Hi there, I’m Dominic, a tutor in the West Reading area. I have a real passion for teaching and would love to help you on your way with mathematics & physics. As a beneficiary of tutoring myself I know how much of an impact it can have. I work as a scientist in the local area and can personally attest that I use the material covered at A-Level every day at my job! When I’m not doing science I write music and perform locally, and enjoy a walk through the countryside with my camera.

Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy is that mathematics and physics isn’t out of reach for anyone. In practice this manifests in a two-pronged approach.

Firstly, to find the explanation or example that specifically works for you, to help you get that “penny drop moment”, no matter how many approaches are required. Everyone thinks differently and learning is not one-size-fits-all.

Secondly, I have a strong belief that the kind of problem solving skills used to succeed in STEM subjects are developed through doing! Being better at them requires going to the gym for your brain, and that means practice. I’m willing to work hard to help you succeed so I hope you are as well. A certain amount of learning by rote is required because you have to have the puzzle pieces in your brain before you can slide them around to solve for the bigger picture. Expect exercises on weaker topics, and crib sheets/other memorization exercises! Ultimately, the people who are good at maths and science are the people who put in hard graft.

My Background

Even in the 6th form I tutored the younger kids! Though my tenure started more formally when I was an undergrad, where I tutored A-Level students and organised study for my cohort.

While studying for my doctorate, I continued to tutor while I could, and also worked as a demonstrator for the university, helping to teach undergraduate classes, both in fieldwork, in programming, and in atmospheric physics. I was shortlisted for a teaching prize by the university thanks to the nomination of my students.

More recently I have worked in a school setting as a laboratory technician, where I taught practical demos in physics, chemistry, and biology to classes from year 7 through upper 6th. I also filled in for a month when a chemistry teacher was unexpectedly long-term absent, teaching A-Level chemistry for this period.
